TRUCK TO DOCK SHELTERS

Dock Shelters, also known as Truck Shelters, come in a wide variety of sizes and models making them the most versatile truck to dock sealing product on the market. Unlike Dock Seals designed to close an opening down to 7'6", Truck Shelters provide full access to the trailer opening. This speeds up loading and unloading the rear of the trailer while reducing damage caused to your seal. The seal is set through the use of hanging curtains with spring steel stays designed to slide along the outside of the trailer as it docks, thus providing an effective weather seal regardless of the trailer size. In addition to a variety of options and add-ons, there are two types of frames offered through Loading Dock Supply.

Unsure of the model or dimensions your job requires?

There are a variety of factors that may affect the dimensions of your dock shelter. When considering which dock shelter model you need keep in mind the points below:

  1. Bumper projection determines the projection of a shelter (frame must be 18" greater than bumper projection from wall)
  2. Head curtain drop (length) and frame projection may be affected by significant truck height variance (We suggest speaking with a representative about this or supplying a completed dock survey found below)
  3. Slope of approach. Truck shelter frames are wedged to accommodate sloped aprons.

How Dock Shelters Seal

Dock Shelters unlike dock seals are designed to provide full access to the rear of the trailer. To accomplish this trailers penetrate shelter frame housings rather than compress against foam pads like when using dock seals. 

To create the seal a series of curtains with spring steel pockets are hung from the shelter frame. As trailers penetrate back into the structure they impact these curtains causing them to slide out and along the trailer wall. The spring steel stays hold the curtains snugly in place against the trailer while bottom corner draft pillows provide an additional seal against upward drafts.

Note: for declining docks rain can prove to be a problem as it runs down the tops of the trailers. For this situation a rain guard or alternative dock seal may be necessary

Wood Frame Dock Shelters

  1. Pressure treated lumber frame covered with translucent fiberglass top and side frames) to allow natural light into the dock area.
  2. 18" overall projection is standard for 4 ½" bumper projection.
  3. Coated polymer fabric face curtains have foam bead on inside edge, which conforms to trailer for better seal.
  4. Raked header prevents water collection on top.
  5. Wear face with guide stripe on bottom corners of face curtains absorb impact of lower trailer corners.
  6. Wind cord prevents head curtain from blowing out of position.
  7. Three overlapping wear pleats in corners absorb impact of sharp trailer edges.
  8. Foam-filled draft pads inside lower corners prevent air from entering "NO STEP" safety logo permanently affixed.
  9. Angle trim secures face and header curtains to shelter frame.
  10. Heavy-duty steel bumper guards support frame and provide protection from incoming vehicles.
  11. Durable fabrics in a wide range of weights, styles, and colors.
  12. Spring steel stays inside of head curtain and side curtains.

Rigid Frame Dock Shelter

Dock Shelter Curtains:

Vertical curtains shall be constructed of:

  1. Base material to be 40 oz. per square yard vinyl coated polyester with high tear Duropreen vinyl coated polyester for high wear areas
  2. 4" Duropreen wear guard with enclosed foam pipe to run along inside edge of each vertical curtain
  3. (1) 22" x 20" Duropreen flap at the bottom of vertical curtain
  4. 3” Duropreen pockets to enclose spring steel stays
  5. Each vertical cover to have (7) spring steel stays measuring .042 x 2" x 24"
  6. 1” Brass Grommets for anchoring
  7. Vertical covers shall have 3" yellow guide stripe run from top to bottom

Dock Shelter Head Curtain shall be constructed of:

  1. Base material to be 40 oz. per square yard vinyl coated polyester with high tear Duropreen vinyl coated polyester for high wear areas
  2. 4" Duropreen wear guard with enclosed foam pipe to extend across bottom edge of Header curtain
  3. (8) 11" x 28" high tear duropreen wear shields per head curtain (four each side)
  4. 1” Brass Grommets For anchoring
  5. 3” Duropreen pockets to enclose spring steel stays  
  6. Head curtain to have (4) Vertical spring steel stays measuring .042 x 2" x 30"

Dock Shelter Frame:

Vertical frame members shall be constructed of:

  1. 2" x 4" preservative treated lumber.
  2. (6) 2" x 4" Horizontal wood braces per vertical member.  
  3. Vertical members are to have (4) 1/8" x 1" x 3" zinc plated flat brackets and (4) 1 1/2 " x 1 1/2" x 3" zinc plated angle brackets for support.
  4. Standard vertical frame is 10'6" high or equal to door height on doors higher than 10'6".
  5. Translucent light panels shall cover the outside of the frame extending 3” past the top of vertical frame.
  6. (2) Zinc plated Channel bracket per vertical to be installed for mounting bottom pillows

Dock Shelter Head frame member shall be constructed of:

  1. 2" x 4" and 2" x 6" preservative treated lumber.
  2. Header frame shall be peaked, sloping 2" towards each side for run off.
  3. Unit complete with (6) 2" x 4" treated lumber braces and (1) 2" x 6" treated lumber center brace
  4. Header frame shall have (4) 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 3" zinc plated angle at each corner for reinforcement
  5. Standard header frame to be 11'6" wide or equal to door width wider than 11'6"
  6. (2) Translucent light panel shall cover the top of the header frame completely overhanging outside edge 2”

Dock Shelter Pillows and Steel Bumpers

Dock Shelter Bottom Corner Pillows:

  1. There shall be two bottom corner pillows per unit  
  2. Base fabric shall be 22 oz. polyurethane vinyl with high density foam core
  3. Preservative treated lumber back to be covered in 22oz. vinyl 
  4. 4”x4” blue mesh screen on base of pillow for drainage and compression
  5. Yellow no step logo to be sewn to top of pillow

Dock Shelter Steel Bumper Supports to be constructed of:

  1. There shall be two steel bumpers per unit
  2. (1) 2/16" x 6" x 24" steel back plate with four 17/32" holes for mounting
  3. 11 gauge 4" square tube shall be welded to steel back plate (extends 4” past dock shelter vertical frame projection)
  4. 6”x12” yellow painted “C” Channel face plate to be welded to end of 4” support tube
  5. (1) Steel knee brace measuring 3/8" x 1 1/4" x 24" welded to back plate and 4” support tube

  1. High density foam filled side pads eliminate the need for steel bumper guards.
  2. Pressure treated lumber backing.
  3. 24" overall projection is standard for 4 ½" bumper projection.
  4. All curtains to have 40oz vinyl base fabric and high tear duropreen at high wear areas
  5. Duropreen enclosed foam Pipe runs length of inside edge, conforming to trailer for better seal.

Soft Side Dock Shelter Pads

Shall be constructed of:

  1. High density polyurethane foam rubber minimum 1.5 lbs density and 45 lbs compression to be used for core
  2. Sides shall be 6" at the back, 6" at the face, and 10'6" in height
  3. Base fabric shall be 22 oz per square yard vinyl
  4. Coated nylon backer board shall be preservative treated 2 x 6 lumber
  5. Vertical sides shall have 4" wide touch and hold velcro running the length of each side for cover attachment

Soft Side Dock Shelter Curtains

Vertical curtains shall be constructed of:

  1. Base material shall be 40 oz. per square yard vinyl with high tear Duropreen vinyl sewn at high wear areas
  2. 4" Duropreen wear guard with enclosed foam pipe to run along inside edge of each vertical curtain
  3. (1) 22" x 20" Duropreen flap at the bottom of vertical curtain
  4. 3” Duropreen pockets to enclose spring steel stays
  5. Each vertical cover to have (7) spring steel stays measuring .042 x 2" x 24"
  6. 1” Brass Grommets for anchoring
  7. Vertical covers shall have 3" yellow guide stripe run from top to bottom
  8. Covers shall have two full length 4" wide velcro strips for mounting to attach each side of vertical pad

Head curtain shall be constructed of:

  1. Base material to be 40 oz. per square yard vinyl coated polyester with high tear Duropreen vinyl coated polyester for high wear areas
  2. 4" Duropreen wear guard with enclosed foam pipe to extend across bottom edge of Header curtain
  3. (12) 11" x 28" high tear duropreen wear shields per head curtain (six each side)
  4. 3” Duropreen pockets to enclose spring steel stays  
  5. Head curtain to have (4) Vertical spring steel stays measuring .042 x 2" x 30"

Soft Side Dock Shelter Head Frame

Shall be constructed of:

  1. 2 x 4 and 2 x 6 preservative treated lumber.
  2. header frame is sloped 2" for run off.
  3. head frame to shall have one 1 ½" x 1 ½" x 3" zinc plated angle at each corner.
  4. translucent light panel to cover entire head frame plus an additional 1 ½" on each side.
  5. head frame shall be supported on each end by eye bolts and aircraft cable affixed to anchors in building face

Bottom Corner Pillows

  1. Base fabric shall be 22 oz vinyl.
  2. Pillows shall attach to side pads via 3" wide touch & hold fastening system

Dock Shelter FAQ

How deep should a dock shelter frame be?
Your dock shelter depth is determined by the slope of your approach and the distance from dock shelter mounting surface to dock bumper face. A general rule of thumb is the dock shelter frame should always extend at least 18" past the face of the dock bumper.

How to install a dock shelter?
