Edge of Dock Leveler Installation

Every edge-of-dock leveler bolts to an approach plate or an embedded steel C-channel on the dock face. Pick the kit that matches your dock — the names below match the Installation Kit choices above.
No plate or channel on your dock yet (most common)
Select this kit
Choose Fastener Kit with 12" Approach Plate (EPAP12C & EPAP3) — 12" beveled plate, 120" wide, with all anchor bolts and hardware.
Dock face needs a deeper transition
Select this kit
Choose Fastener Kit with 24" Approach Plate (EPAP24C & EPAP3) — same hardware with a 24" plate for a gentler approach grade.
Dock already has a C-channel or approach plate
Select this kit
Choose Fastener Kit for Leveler Only (EPAP2) — nine 3/4" x 4" wedge anchors with nuts and washers, nothing you don't need.

20EP66 Overview

With an Edge of Dock Leveler 20EP66 you’ll gain the benefits of a pit leveler without the extensive labor and upfront costs associated with installation and upkeep. Mounted directly to the face of your dock, an edge of dock leveler (EOD) provides dependable access to trailers ±5” above and below the loading dock. The standard manual model actuates via a self-storing handle that relies on a high torsion spring and latch assembly, allowing the lip to raise and glide onto the bed of the trailer with moderate operator effort. When loading is finished you can either let the leveler fall back to its resting position as the truck leaves, or cycle it back with the handle.

Features

  • Capacities from 20,000 to 30,000 lbs.
  • Alternate widths of 72" and 78"
  • Self-storing lip and handle
  • Refrigerated lip optional
  • Bumpers and bumper blocks included
  • Operates ±5" above and below dock level
  • 16.75” bumper face projection
  • Simple to install
  • Fast, simple operation

Service Range

The 20EP66 is designed to operate ±5" above and below dock level when used with gas forklifts, or ±3" above and below dock level for all other equipment types. For loading docks too low for this working range, we offer low dock ramps designed to be mounted to the floor of your dock opening, allowing the leveler to be mounted at a height suitable to your needs.

Sizing by Forklift Capacity

A dock leveler should be rated above the weight it will actually carry. To size the leveler to your forklift, multiply the forklift’s carrying capacity by the factor below to find a suggested minimum leveler capacity:

  • Four-wheeled forklifts: 3 × forklift capacity = suggested leveler capacity
  • Three-wheeled forklifts: 4 × forklift capacity = suggested leveler capacity

If the suggested capacity exceeds 20,000 lbs, higher-capacity models (25,000 and 30,000 lbs) are available in the same widths.

For specifiers and bid writers. Blank fields (____) require confirmation from the current Bluff cut sheet or approval drawing for the unit as ordered.

A. Manufacturer

1. Design is based on products manufactured by Bluff Manufacturing, 9201 South Freeway, Fort Worth, TX 76140.
2. Type: Loading dock leveler shall be a fully mechanical edge of dock leveler with self-storing operating handle and torsion-spring lift assist.

B. Product Characteristics

1. Product: Mechanical edge of dock leveler — Model 20EP66.
2. Size: 66" usable width (88" overall) with an overall span (dock to truck bed) of 27-3/4". Closed depth 17". Alternate usable widths of 72" and 78" available.
3. Capacity: 20,000 lbs. (25,000 and 30,000 lb. capacities also available).
4. Estimated weight: ____ lbs (approximately 448 lbs; confirm against current approval drawing).

C. Construction

Deck (center section) and front lip shall be 3/8" steel tread/safety plate, ____ minimum yield. Front lip shall project 15" with bumpers projecting 16-3/4" from the dock face. Lip hinge pin (____ diameter / ____ material) shall be supported by hinge tubes with grease fittings. Hinge tube I.D. ____.

D. Operation

A self-storing operating handle activates the deck and lip. The lip extends and engages the truck bed as the handle is worked, and the unit automatically returns to its stored position, parallel to the dock face, when the truck departs.

E. Lift Assist

Torsion-spring counterbalance, factory-set. The leveler raises with moderate operator effort; effort increases with model capacity and is affected by hinge-tube lubrication and spring condition. The spring assembly (EPSA) is a serviceable, replaceable component.

F. Working Range

±5" above and below dock level with gas or propane forklifts; ±3" above and below dock level for electric forklifts, pallet jacks, and all other equipment.

G. Compliance

Leveler and warranty shall meet or exceed the performance requirements of ANSI MH30.2 and CS-202-55 (OSHA / US Dept. of Commerce).

H. Bumpers

Two (2) EPDM bumpers per leveler, included.

  1. The driver reverses the vehicle firmly against the dock bumpers.
  2. The dock operator confirms the trailer is chocked or restrained against forward creep or unexpected departure.
  3. Pull the handle up until the dead bolt hits the bottom of the 2-inch-square tube sleeve.
  4. Pull the handle back until the latch mechanism falls into the catch position.
  5. Push the handle forward to extend the unit toward the truck bed until the front lip rests fully on the truck floor.
  6. Return the handle to its rest position while loading. Make sure the lip overlaps the truck bed by at least 8 inches before forklift entry.

  1. Confirm loading is complete and all personnel and equipment have cleared the leveler.
  2. Pull the handle up until the dead bolt hits the bottom of the tube sleeve.
  3. Pull the handle back until the front lip clears the truck floor.
  4. Allow the weight of the leveler to lower the deck into its stored position, parallel to the dock face.

When the leveler is not in use, keep it in the lowered, stored position.

Daily (Before use) Visual inspection of deck surface, welds, mount plate, and anchors for obstructions, cracks, or signs of wear
Every 30 days (multi-shift / above-normal usage)

Full inspection, cleaning, and lubrication

Every 6 months (normal usage) Full inspection, cleaning, and lubrication
  • Cleaning: clear debris from the hinge tube areas with a wire brush.
  • Grease: grease the zerk fittings located underneath the deck.
  • Spring assembly: check for proper deck float; inspect the spring linkage rod for bending.
  • Handle: inspect for bending or cracking — an improperly bent handle can prevent proper latching.
  • Latch & latch catch: inspect contact surfaces for wear.
  • Structural: check welds, mount plate, anchors, and the 3/8" steel deck for wear or cracking.
Read the full breakdown in the EOD Installation Guide (PDF)

Front lip does not extend when the handle is raised:

  • Confirm the latch is attached and the notch faces the dock.
  • Check the latch assembly for damage or excessive wear.

Handle hits the dock surface when raised:

  • Confirm the handle is seated correctly in the holster with the bend facing away from the dock (toward the trailer).
  • Inspect the handle for bending or damage.

Leveler will not raise high enough for the latch to catch:

  • Check hinge tube clearance — tubes should sit at least 1/8" above the dock surface.
  • Inspect the hinge tubes for debris (wood, nails, etc.) that can block rotation.
  • Check the handle for damage.

Leveler is difficult to raise and lower:

  • Clean debris from the hinge tube areas with a wire brush.
  • Grease the hinge tubes thoroughly — insufficient lubrication is the most common cause.

Always specify model number 20EP66 and your unit’s serial number when ordering parts.
